Inprint Intensive Workshops - Poetry
SATURDAY January 20, 2024 and Sunday January 21st 1:30 pm- 5:30 pm
Inprint House
1520 W Main St
Houston, TX 77006
The common critique of US poetry is its hyper-focus on the word I. While it is true that poetry’s ability to make discoveries within personal experience has proven to be a powerful engine, have we lost the poetics of Milton and Dante who traversed through realms mortals dare not wander? In this generative workshop, we will grapple with this question and try to hold space with the world outside of human experience, from plants and animals, to the sun, and into the afterlife (if we are lucky). Our mentors will be poems (and some other writings) by Vladimir Mayakovsky, Frank O’Hara, Anne Carson, Layli Long Soldier, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Ariana Reines, William Blake, Kazim Ali, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Amanda Berenguer, and Clarice Lispector among others.
